Eddie and the Cruisers LP is that rare case where the soundtrack and the music made the movie a hit. This is the first time in 30 years the vinyl album has been available. The CD is still a hot seller s classic rock listings. The movie and the soundtrack still have plenty of fans.
After successful screenings on HBO in 1984 the album suddenly climbed the charts, going quadruple platinum. Nine months after the film was released in theaters, the main song in the film , “On The Dark Side”, was the number one song on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock, and Heatseeker charts; and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Another single from the film, “Tender Years”, peaked at #31 on the Billboard Hot 100.
This 1983 drama may have missed the mark at the box office (mixed reviews didn't help), but a year after its release, the "rediscovered" soundtrack began climbing the charts, prompting the studio to re-release the record. Includes the No. 1 hit "On the Dark Side," "Runaround Sue," "Down on My Knees," "Hang up My Rock & Roll Shoes" — John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band, "Runaway" — Del Shannon, "Boardwalk Angel" — Ben E. King, "Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me of You)," and more.
