The limitless sound cosmos of the Kronos Quartet produced many a cult album - such as the project Pieces of Africa in the early 90s, which now appears on vinyl.

These are commissioned works written by seven composers from various regions of the "black continent" who - probably for the first time - receive their own voice on a classical chamber music album. The spectrum ranges from Morocco (Hassan Hakmoun) to Egypt and Sudan (Hamza El Din), Uganda (Justinian Tamusuza), Ghana (Obo Addy), Gambia (Foday Musa Suso) and Zimbabwe (Dumisani Maraire) to South Africa (Kevin Volan ).

The special thing about it: The composers not only represent their own musical culture, which they transfer to the extremely wide-ranging musical possibilities of the Kronos Quartet - their own view of European music is also expressed, so that the diverse African influences such as complicated rhythmic patterns or Arabic embossed melodies with classical simplicity and European harmony.
Reviews
Fono: "Simple European cadence harmonics and rather simple string quartet technique combine in a very harmonious, almost puristic manner with the idioms of African rhythm, gestures and melodies."
