The Absolute Sound Super Disc List TAS Harry Pearson Super LP List
It is ironic, though not without precedent, that the work for which Saint-Saëns is best known today should have been regarded by him as a jeu d’esprit. Written as a surprise item for a Mardi Gras concert, its further performance was prohibited, and though it was afterwards given privately (once at the special request of Liszt) only The Swan was released during the composer’s lifetime. John Ogden and Brenda Lucas on pianos. Recorded by Stuart Eltham, 1973.
