On this release, violinist Salvatore Accardo performs Paganini's "24 Capricci Op. 1."

The 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, Op. 1, were written by Nicolò Paganini between 1802 and 1817 and published in 1819. The caprices are in the form of études, with each number studying individual skills (double stopped trills, extremely fast switching of positions and strings, etc).

When Paganini released his caprices, he dedicated them "to the Artists" rather than to a specific person. Unlike many earlier and later sets of 24 pieces, there was no intention to write these caprices in 24 different keys.

Salvatore Accardo - violin. Recordings from 17 to 19 February 2002 Palazzo Affaitati in Cremona, Italy

Fans of Italian luxury label Fone know certainly the Italian violin virtuoso Salvatore Accardo, who is one of the figureheads of the label for years. Now Accardo ventures together with label boss and engineer Giulio Cesare Ricci to the absolute master exam for every violinist Nicolo Paganini Opus 1, the 24 Capricci for solo violin. The 24 small pieces belong to the most virtuosic and technically demanding repertoire that was ever composed for this instrument.

Accardo copes on his Stradivarius not only brilliantly all the technical finesse of the work (after all, he made his debut in the concert already with 13 years with this opus), but also impressed by a vocal and lyrical quality with which the Capricci from mere bravura also to musically entertaining and are moving experience. Equally spotlessly copes recording head Ricci testing: the sensitive sound of the historical instruments (specifically: both instruments, since Accardo plays on two different Stradivarius violins) and the splendid acoustics of the Palazzo Affaitati in Cremona, he captures with a lot of warmth and attention to detail - never sounds lonely instrument here is thin, always comes the whole sonority to bear, the Paganini and Accardo elicit the violin. Masterfully!
