Half Speed Mastered on the Mobile Fidelity The Gain 2 Ultra Analog System
Forget the empty criticisms. Barry Manilow needs no justification. Cited by Frank Sinatra in the 1970s as the next great entertainer, respected by artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, and author of albums that have sold more than 80 million copies, the singer looms as a pop legend, the voice and songwriter behind some of the most everlasting music created during the past four decades. A collection to beat all, his best is amassed on Greatest Hits.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on dead-quiet 180 gram 2LP at RTI, Mobile Fidelity’s reissue of this 1978 compilation presents Manilow in the finest sonics he’s ever enjoyed. The human voice is recognized as the most difficult sound to capture. Manilow’s is no different. It’s one reason Mobile Fidelity engineers took every cautious step in going to each studio album, taking the original tracks, and mastering them in a manner in which dynamics, clarity, soundstaging, balance, and imaging are vastly improved.
Originally released at the height of his chart dominance and record-breaking popularity, Greatest Hits contains Barry Manilow’s 14 consecutive Top 30 hits spanning 1974-1978 as well as several uptempo tracks that balance the balladic fare. At the time, Manilow scored five albums on the best-selling charts at once, an achievement accomplished by only four other artists. His relatable lyrics, often championing underdogs and against-all-odds love, combine with fabulously orchestrated arrangements suited for his intimate style and subtle sense of swing.
Recognized as the number-one adult contemporary artist of all-time and a premier showman, the pianist/singer secured his reputation with an enviable string of standards included here. Manilow’s high-charting hits expertly pair mood with music, spanning dramaturgical orchestration (“Could It Be Magic”), disco dance (“It’s a Miracle”), mellow pop (“Mandy), serious balladeering (“I Write the Songs”), crescendo-rich torch (“Tryin’ to Get the Feeling Again”), sweeping romanticism (“This One’s For You”), and swooning sentimentalism (“Looks Like We Made It”).
There’s no doubting why these classics, as well as “Copacabana,” “Somewhere in the Night,” and more, remain staples of his sold-out concerts to this very day. Experience them all like never before!

GAIN 2 Ultra Analog™ is a proprietary cutting system built and designed by legendary design genius Tim De Paravicini, with consultation from one of MFSL’s founding fathers – Stan Ricker, an audio engineer responsible for many of MFSL’s most heralded past releases.
The GAIN 2 Ultra Analog™ system is comprised of a Studer™ tape machine with customized reproduction electronics* and handcrafted cutting amps that drive an Ortofon cutting head on a restored Neumann VMS-70 lathe. (*It is worth noting that independent studies have confirmed that the GAIN 2 Ultra Analog™ system can unveil sonic information all the way up to 122kHz!)
First and foremost, we only utilize first generation original master recordings as source material for our releases. We then play back master tapes at half speed enabling the GAIN 2 Ultra Analog™ system to fully extract the master’s sonic information. Our lacquers are then plated in a specialized process that protects transients in the musical signal. (Due to this process, there may be occasional pops or ticks inherent in initial play back, but as the disc is played more, a high quality stylus will actually polish the grooves and improve the sound). We further ensure optimum sound quality by strictly limiting the number of pressings printed for each release. These limited editions, in addition to being collectors’ items, ensure that the quality of the last pressing matches the quality of the first.
As you can imagine, all these efforts involve a tremendous amount of time, technology, cost and effort. The introduction of GAIN 2 Ultra Analog™ maintains Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab’s position as the world’s leading audiophile record label, where a passion for music with extraordinary sound quality matters most.
