MPS -- 180 Gram Virgin Vinyl - AAA 100% Analogue
Pressed in Germany - Limited Edition
This recording of 1971 marks the start of the fertile relationship of the Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander with MPS, which had a decade and includes about a dozen albums.
Initially praised as the legacy of Oscar Peterson, Alexander soon became famous for his fusion of jazz, Caribbean sounds and blues. Montevideo starts off with a Latin beat in a two-act and a pianoforte, which is adorned with many quotations. Where is Love is a longing, romantic serenade, and the George Harrison composition Here Comes The Sun transforms Monty into a blues-dyed Latin number with a touch of boogie.
The standard Love Walked In takes Alexander at a fast pace, demonstrating his forward-forward rhythm with bebop cross-references. On the sensual Brown Skin Girl follows Monty's tender, wistful solo version of The Dream Is Mine. And under Miles Davis' cult piece So What, the quartet sets a driving Latin rock beat.
Variety brings well-known spice to life - in this sense, Monty Alexander and his colleagues have really tasted this album.
