Aficionados will know Christian Meyers as one of Germany’s most highly-respected trumpeters. In his elegant ensemble ‘Meyers Nachtcafé’, the Berlin-based artist brings together musicians from the Stuttgart music scene: Martin Johnson (Rhodes), Rüdiger Nass (Guitar), Alex Uhl (Bass) and Eckhard Stromer (Drums). Following the example of Roy Hargrove’s Band ‘RH Factor’, Meyers Nachtcafé combines elements of jazz, funk, hip-hop and soul. The music gets straight to your soul and is interspersed by lounge-like ballads, in which Christian Meyers coaxes wonderfully floating, deeply melancholic sounds from his Flugelhorn. Meyers Nachtcafé is a band which is a real pleasure to hear, especially when performing live, because the energy of cooperation and interplay gets to your very core.
Master of sound and recording engineer, Johannes Wohlleben, who previously recorded two of Christian Meyers’ CD productions for the Neuklang label, was once again responsible for this live recording. The enjoyable evening concert was recorded live in pure analogue, direct to stereo tape and without additional editing or post-production processing… and now at last it’s available on vinyl!
The name Meyers Nachtcafe is perfectly chosen for the combo around trumpeter Christian Meyers, because the smoothe, funky jazz with its relaxed soul impact is exactly the right thing for night owls of all kinds. Whether Meyers in the ballads his flugelhorn with the Fender Rhodes or the rhythm group with guitarist Rüdiger Nass unpack the radio tool, the sound in this live recording is always pleasantly casual and uninhibited - in view of the fact that this is a direct recording, doubly remarkable ! Best suited for your own night cafe in the living room.
