Pure Analogue Audiophile Half Speed Mastering by Stan Ricker
Numbered Limited Edition - Pressed at RTI
This was a demonstration quality record in its original release, which I liked to pull off the shelf to show friends what could easily be found for a few pounds. Is the improvement reflected in the new release worth the cost of this deluxe re-issue? Pure Audiophile has released the original album, plus one bonus track from New York Scene, spread across two 180 gram red vinyl discs, half-speed mastered by Stan Ricker and pressed at RTI. The results are impressive. An already great sounding album now sounds spectacular." Recording = 10/10; Music = 10/10 – Dennis Davis, Hi-Fi+,
This is the last recording of Wynton Marsalis as a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, at the same time replaced his brother Branford alto saxophonist Bobby Watson. The remainder of this superb sextet is composed of tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce, pianist Donald Brown, bassist Charles Fambrough and the 'battle-tested' drummer and bandleader Blakey. All members of the sextet show up in top form, whether in new compositions such as Wynton Marsalis' "Waterfalls" and Watson's "Fuller Love" and standards like "In Walked Bud" and "In a Sentimental Mood". This is energetic hard-bop in the best tradition of the Jazz Messengers.
