If ever there was a First Lady among the female singers who epitomized the Motown Sound, then it must be Mary Wells. At the tender age of 16 she entered Berry Gordy’s office to present him a song she had written herself. She had no knowledge of musical notation and so she had to sing it to him. This she did with such conviction that he offered her a contract. A whole series of hits followed and in 1964 her smash hit "My Guy" climbed to the top of the US pop charts and landed at no. 5 in England, with the result that the Beatles invited her to go on tour with them. No wonder, then that an LP carries the title of her signature tune. The groovy number sets the whole album swinging, no matter whether it’s a rock number, or one with a Latin rhythm, or sparkling with Broadway glamour. The LP is full of the highly differentiated colouring of Mary Wells’ voice – full and sonorous in the middle range, airy in the top register and of course black in its basic timbre.
Nothing you can say could tear us away
With My Guy, Mary Wells reached the pinnacle of her career. Its parent LP became the last she recorded for Motown before moving to 20th Century Fox and a career nose-dive. The key to Wells’ Motown success was, of course, her backing production team, lead by Smokey Robinson, who laid the foundation for a quality LP packed with Wells’ signature vocal style (a little reticent but promising naughtiness). This is a Motown classic boasting the title track, At Last and more. 5 stars Record Collector
