Alexander Borodin: Symphony No. 2 / Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow: Capriccio Espagnol Op. 34, march from "Tsar Saltan" - the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jean Martinon
Jean Martinon leads the London Symphony Orchestra for this recording of compositional music by Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov.
One of the best U.K. Living Stereos with very good dynamics recorded at Kingsway Hall. Borodin's Second Symphony is coupled with Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnole. This record is notable for its fine, lively performances. Midband transparency, detail, dynamics and texture are very good, especially in the first two movements of the Borodin.
On this 1958 record, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakoff are two Russian composers who were not only good friends and both members of the so-called "Group of Five", but also shared the fate of their music always behind a demanding main job Borodin as a surgeon and chemist, Rimsky-Korsakoff as a naval officer. Both united an interest in Russian folklore and history, and a rare gift for colorful orchestration. Borodin's powerful second symphony is juxtaposed here with the dazzling "Capriccio Espagnole" by Rimsky-Korsakov. The London Symphony Orchestra under Jean Martinon dispenses the sprawling scores with energy and wisdom, especially Borodin's symphony captivates here by a rarely heard Elan
RCA's "golden age" was more like a "golden minute" - in a scant period, roughly from 1958 to 1963, the beginning of the stereo era - pure vacuum tube amplification helped produce recordings demonstrating unparalleled fidelity and warmth, lifelike presence and midband illumination.
