Alexander Gibson conducts the London Symphony Orchestra for this recording of music by Sibelius. Large, notably transparent soundstage on this recording, in which the orchestra is set back farther than the usual Decca/RCA. Recorded by renowned Decca audio engineer Kenneth Wilkinson.
In the 1950s, there were two conductors in Great Britain who supported the work of the hitherto unprejudiced Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius: the Englishman Thomas Beecham and the Scot Alexander Gibson. Gibson can be heard here in a recording with the London Symphony Orchestra from 1960, with the Fifth Symphony - the work that is sort of the bursting node in Sibelius' oeuvre. After years of creative crisis, self-doubt and repeatedly rejected works, the Fifth of 1915 is the first work of the five-year-old, with whom he was not only completely satisfied, but also fully breathes the visionary spirit of this last great symphonic composer. Dark and voluptuous in the sound,
