This 1959 recording remains one of my indispensable favorites for its ability to re-create in my listening room the massive power and deep-bass range of a pipe organ accompanied by a full orchestra. Designed by G. Donald Harrison and built by the Aeolian-Skinner Company, the great organ of Boston's Symphony Hall was installed just 10 years before this recording was made. The deepest pedal notes in Saint-Saëns's Symphony 3—the 36.7Hz low D-flats at the end of the first movement, and the 32.6Hz low C's at the end of the second—"provide the rock-solid foundations on which the whole towering [symphonic] structure is securely based," as R.D. Darrell says in his liner note. No other recording quite yields the sustained musical power or clearly delineates descending scales as this one does, making it easy to determine a subwoofer's pitch definition, and its ability to create "room lock" in my large listening room -Stereophile.com

"These are the best vinyl releases of RCA LPs I've yet heard." — Jonathan Valin, executive editor, The Absolute Sound

"So far, Analogue Productions' series of outstanding reissues have avoided the missteps of the previous Classic Records issues, instead offering real improvements over the originals. ... The latest release, of this title and the Offenbach Gaite Parisienne (LSC 1817), keeps a perfect track record of outstanding Living Stereo releases by Analogue Productions. Pristine surfaces and better-defined layers of sound along with much finer texture add up to a wonderful experience of the famous Organ Symphony. The original is almost coarse sounding compared to this reissue. While the Offenbach reissue does not eclipse the original in all areas, the original remains very expensive and the reissue is superb." Recording = 10/10; Music = 10/10 - Dennis D. Davis, Hi-Fi +,

Stereophile Magazine Record to Die For!

This performance of the Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 (Organ Symphony) is a favorite Living Stereo release.

To say that it is incredible might be an understatement.

The original 3-track session tapes were used in mastering this LP in the Analogue Productions reissue series.

The record reveals all of the glory of the recording and the precision and passion of Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston's Symphony Hall. It doesn't get any better than this.

The Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78, was completed by Camille Saint-Saëns in 1886 at what was probably the artistic peak of his career. It is also popularly known as the Organ Symphony, even though it is not a true symphony for organ, but simply an orchestral symphony where two sections out of four use the pipe organ. The composer inscribed it as: Symphonie No. 3 "avec orgue" (with organ).

.I'd have to say that the usual stumbling blocks have been sidestepped. Great care has been taken to do the right things, starting with the way the decision to remaster these RCAs was made."Jonathan Valin, The Absolute Sound.
