First officially released in complete form by Reprise in 1986, Experience Hendrix/Sony finally released, in 2014, a proper all-analog vinyl edition of the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s fiery (literally) 1967 Monterey Pop Festival performance. Not only is this reissue significant for its historic musical content, but this vinyl edition is also done as all LPs should (when possible); all-analog mastering by Bernie Grundman, 200g QRP pressing, an insert featuring Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell’s 2007 essay about the show Many live albums are unfortunately cut from digital transfers of the tapes, but not in this case; it shows in the transportive (albeit rough) sound quality. The multitude of recently reissued Hendrix live recordings can easily leave a casual listener confused, but if there’s one live Hendrix LP to have, it’s Live At Monterey.-  Analogplanet's Best Reissues of the Decade!

Live At Monterey captures The Jimi Hendrix Experience's mythic U.S. debut performance on June 18, 1967 at the Monterey Pop Festival.
A captivated California audience witnessed the original band line up of Hendrix, Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding blaze through soon-to-be-classic originals such as "Foxey Lady," "The Wind Cries Mary," and "Purple Haze," as well as transformative versions of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone," and The Troggs' "Wild Thing" before Hendrix set his guitar ablaze.
This show is credited as having launched The Jimi Hendrix Experience into superstardom; they would go on to become the highest grossing touring act in the U.S. soon thereafter.

released scant weeks before Hendrix's death in September 1970. In 1986, Jimi Plays Monterey, containing the full ten-song set, appeared. Both those albums were released on Hendrix's original U.S. label, the Reprise imprint of Warner Bros. Records. Experience Hendrix, the company formed to reissue the guitarist's work after his recordings were acquired by his family, has put out its own versions of many of his discs, and Live at Monterey is its take on the Monterey show.

Although Hendrix had become a star in the U.K., he was largely unknown in his home country. He had, however, already been signed to Reprise, which had issued his debut American single, "Hey Joe," on May 1, 1967. That's why he says, "It's 'Hey Joe' that really brought us here" in introducing the song. A Top 40 hit for the Leaves in 1966, it had not, however, become a hit for Hendrix as it had in the U.K. Of course, his version was a distinct reinterpretation.

He also played his next American single, "Purple Haze," due for release the next day. It would become his first 45 to chart in the U.S. And he oriented his set somewhat for American ears, including such familiar songs as "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Wild Thing," as well as the blues standards "Killing Floor" (by Howlin' Wolf) and "Rock Me Baby" (by B.B. King). His most recent U.K. hit, "The Wind Cries Mary," was included, as was "Foxey Lady," which would follow "Purple Haze" into the U.S. charts.

So, the set was well chosen to introduce him to an American audience, even if that audience reacted in understandable amazement encountering a style of guitar playing hitherto unimagined and a flamboyant performance that culminated in a guitar doused in lighter fluid and going up in flames.

But even after 40 years Hendrix's playing still has the power to astonish the listener.
