100 Recommended All-Analog reissues Worth Owning - Michael Fremer Analogplanet

Stereophile magazine's Editor's Pick Recording Of The Month, May 2017!

To survive and prosper, any reissue label must eventually make a splash with a surprise release that's not only relevant, but hasn't yet had a proper remastering. For Intervention, this is that album. The new marvelous-sounding analog lacquer was cut by Kevin Gray, at Cohearent Audio, and the discs were pressed at RTI. The source was a flat safety copy, on 30ips 1/2" tape, of the original stereo master... The Gilded Palace of Sin is probably the fullest expression of Parsons's vision of a hybrid music... His singing was nasal, with shaky intonation, and yet it had undeniable presence." - Robert Baird, Stereophile, May 2017, Recording of the Month, Performance 5/5, Sonics 4.5/5

This record has never sounded this well balanced yet still happily sonically “out to lunch”.You also get a great laminated Stoughton Press “Tip-on” jacket and RTI pressing for your money. A reader asked if I’d assembled a “100 essential albums” list. I haven’t but when I do, this will be on it as will be The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and Clark, another album that mingled country and rock released on A&M a year before this record. It’s in need of an all-analog reissue, preferably as a “two-fer” with the follow up Through the Morning Through the Night. There may be other reissues of this record costing less but do not be fooled! This is the only one that’s AAA. It costs more but it’s worth it. Just be forewarned: if your front end can't handle the bass, it might still sound sloppy but if it can and you know the record, you'll hear the notes more cleanly than ever, but with the surrounding "muck" still there as required by the "original intent". Sound 9/10 Music 9/10 Michael Fremer

Intervention’s sumptuous tip-on artwork makes Barry Feinstein’s tongue-in-cheek cover photograph even more vivid. You can’t appreciate the full measure of The Gilded Palace of Sin until you hear this  pressing. Sound 4.5/5 VinylReviews

"Intervention Records apparently screwed up and shipped the master tape to Ultra Fidelis. From the opening stylus cue (sorry, I can't say 'needle drop'), I had the sensation that it was 1969, and I was transported to the recording venue and allowed to watch one of my very most favorite recordings being made." - Jon Spelt,, Ultra Fidelis

The new LP leaves my CD and LP, and the tracks on the compilation CD, in the dust. The guitars have more twang, Kleinow’s pedal steel more whine and sustain, Ethridge’s bass more attack and rhythmic life, and the soundstage is wider, deeper, and more alive with sound. And this reissue makes even more obvious that Chris Hillman was Parsons’s equal in this band. It highlights how skilled and versatile he was as a guitarist, and how crucial he was as both a harmony and lead vocalist. Soundstage Ultra

This is a 100% AAA affair headed up by Kevin Gray himself.. Mercy sakes alive, am I happy to have this one on the shelf.- Sound 5/5 Hifelity
