"Costello’s voice is far more natural-sounding here. The drums have more real texture, the cymbals cleanly rendered shimmer. The small dynamic shifts that bring the production to life, lost by compression, are here to enjoy. In fact, after you feel the need to crank it up higher at first, you’ll end up bringing the level back down to enjoy the album’s real sonic pleasures." - Michael Fremerr Music 9/10, Sound 9/10
Sourced from Original Master Tapes
Largely written on tour, Elvis Costello’s Armed Forces takes the concept of personal politics to a new level. A supremely melodic and hook-laden record, the 1979 set is a showcase of scintillating keyboard lines, sharp guitar work, and the most cohesive arrangements of Costello and the Attractions’ career.
In every way, this is a pop masterpiece, defined by hits such as “Accidents Will Happen,” “Oliver’s Army,” and the anthemic “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace Love and Understanding?”
Mastered from the original tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition 180-gram LP presents the vibrant dynamics of the timeless pop songs in the highest possible fidelity.
This album has never sounded so full, rich, airy, spacious, detailed, or necessary. The textures and voicings of Nieve’s keyboards are alone worth the investment.
This will have you dancing in the aisles!

“Amidst the renaissance that vinyl continues to enjoy, these reissues Elvis Costello Armed Forces True, shine brightly.” – Marc Mickelson, www.theaudiobeat.com, Music 5/5, Sound 3.5/5 Sound!
"Costello's third album is wound tight, full of paranoia and anger. The concept is personal politics; the original title was Emotional Fascism, and one of the songs is called "Two Little Hitlers." The keyboard-driven sound of "Accidents Will Happen" helped define New Wave." - www.rollingstone.com
"'What’s So Funny' was written by Lowe, Costello’s pal and producer. The original, by Lowe’s country-rock band Brinsley Schwartz, was mellow and cute, but Costello snarls the song intensely enough to make the title question seem brand-new, with thundering drums and droning piano. It’s like Abba playing punk rock." - Rolling Stone

GAIN 2 Ultra Analog™ is a proprietary cutting system built and designed by legendary design genius Tim De Paravicini, with consultation from one of MFSL’s founding fathers – Stan Ricker, an audio engineer responsible for many of MFSL’s most heralded past releases.
The GAIN 2 Ultra Analog™ system is comprised of a Studer™ tape machine with customized reproduction electronics* and handcrafted cutting amps that drive an Ortofon cutting head on a restored Neumann VMS-70 lathe. (*It is worth noting that independent studies have confirmed that the GAIN 2 Ultra Analog™ system can unveil sonic information all the way up to 122kHz!)
First and foremost, we only utilize first generation original master recordings as source material for our releases. We then play back master tapes at half speed enabling the GAIN 2 Ultra Analog™ system to fully extract the master’s sonic information. Our lacquers are then plated in a specialized process that protects transients in the musical signal. (Due to this process, there may be occasional pops or ticks inherent in initial play back, but as the disc is played more, a high quality stylus will actually polish the grooves and improve the sound). We further ensure optimum sound quality by strictly limiting the number of pressings printed for each release. These limited editions, in addition to being collectors’ items, ensure that the quality of the last pressing matches the quality of the first.
As you can imagine, all these efforts involve a tremendous amount of time, technology, cost and effort. The introduction of GAIN 2 Ultra Analog™ maintains Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab’s position as the world’s leading audiophile record label, where a passion for music with extraordinary sound quality matters most.
