The best this album can be There is no question, this is a classic album worth owning. The pressing quality is exceptional, as one would expect for fifty bucks. There's detail in spades. Percussion instruments jump out of your speakers. To nit pick a little, what's missing is the "you are there" feeling. Instruments don't quite sound natural enough to convince you that the musicians are in the room with you. There's not much of a center image between the speakers, and the recording could use some warmth. That said, those qualities are probably on the original tapes. , this one will spend a lot of time on my table. The music and resolution are fantastic.5/5 LPreview
Excellent Reissue from the Org Team I looked forward to this title put forward by the folks at ORG and its the first vinyl issue Ive owned since obtaining a mint original Columbia US copy and having owned a Japan CBS Sony issue from the early 80s. The idea of having this on 45 RPM seems like a good one with some of the attendant sonic benefits and fewer compromises in terms of creating Lacquers and such. The mastering by Bernie Grundman preserves the qualities inherent in the original mix and the pressing via Pallas in Germany is ideal for the quieter moments and the ethereal tones on this first effort by the band..ambient and avant textures presented very faithfully. I think a few of the back cover elements were not reproduced 100% but the quality of the heavy Card Stock and gate-fold jacket is beyond reproach. Overall another fine release by ORG. 5/5 LP
Here we have the free-floating, abstract beginnings of Weather Report, which would define the state of the electronic jazz/rock art from its first note almost to its last. Their first album is a direct extension of the Miles Davis In a Silent Way/Bitches Brew period, more fluid in sound and more volatile in interplay. Joe Zawinul ruminates in a delicate, liquid manner on Rhodes electric piano; at this early stage, he used a ring modulator to create weird synthesizer-like effects. Wayne Shorter's soprano sax shines like a beacon amidst the swirling ensemble work of co-founding bassist Miroslav Vitous, percussionist Airto Moreira, and drummer Alphonse Mouzon. Zawinul's most memorable theme is "Orange Lady" (previously recorded, though uncredited, by Davis on Big Fun), while Shorter scores on "Tears" and "Eurydice." One of the most impressive debuts of all time by a jazz group.
"One of the most impressive debuts of all time by a jazz group." - AllMusic.com
Winner of the Swing Journal Grand Prix Award and Jazz Album of the Year from DownBeat Magazine upon its 1971 release, the self-titled debut from jazz fusion supergroup Weather Report - led by pianist/keyboardist Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter - finds the two artists fresh off stints with the Cannonball Adderley Quintet and the Miles Davis Quintet.
In fact Zawinul and Shorter were both featured on Davis' seminal releases In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew and the visionary sounds of those records is further explored here. With bassist Miroslav Vitous, drummer Alphonse Mouzon, and percussionist Airto Moreira also in tow, the quintet produces a thoughtful and adventurous 8-song set that stands as one of the best debuts of any group in any genre.
