"…the set is a blast from start to finish and so far I've found it impossible to play a single track without enjoying the full set. And whilst it'll never be the classic that its predecessor has become, this remains a great example of the genius of Mingus – and in this superb issue a lasting joy." Recording = 9.5/10; Music = 9.5/10 – Dave Davies, Hi-Fi+,
Mingus Dynasty, like its predecessor and Columbia companion Mingus Ah Um, was recorded in 1959, a watershed year for the insuperable, eruptive bassist-composer Charles Mingus. Leading what amounted to a repertory company comprising some of New York's best and most creative improvisers, Mingus musically challenged two ensembles as they'd never been challenged before.
The music herein remains as arresting as the LP's original cover photograph of a mock-imperious Mingus in full Chinese emperor regalia was eye-catching.
"Mingus Dynasty" was, as the previous album "Mingus Ah Um", recorded in 1959. That year was a turning point for the unsurpassed, eruptive bassist and composer Charles Mingus. He led a repertory theater, consisting of the most creative improvising musicians of New York and two groups, one Tentett and a nonet, which included two cellos, and demanded the delivery of his improvisation groups like never before. The music in the album is similarly captivating as the eye-catching cover photo that shows Mingus in a kind of mockery costume of a Chinese emperor.
For the album includes a bonus track, the famous Mingus on "Strollin", that he wrote with Honey Gordon plays a part in Tentett, composed. It is known as an instrumental piece in "Nostalgia in Times Square", the soundtrack to John Cassawetes "Shadows" . Mingus honors in his album also two generations of Ellington. His idol, Duke Ellington, whose "Mood Indigo" contains a virtuoso bass solo and the Son of Maestro, Mercer Ellington with "Things Is not What They Used To Be". A series of glowing gospel originals such as "slop" and "Gunslinging Bird" are, in a 6/8 time, a specialty of Mingus. Finally, more complex pieces to hear how "Far Wells, Mill Valley" and "Diane", which as a flower unfolds after a atonal beginning with Mingus' most beautiful musical themes.
The line-up of musicians would have been not only in 1959 difficult to excel . This recently remastered and expanded version of "Mingus Dynasty" by Michael Cuscuna was originally produced by Teo Macero produced.'s Original comment of the artist is here reproduced such as him Diane Dorr-Doryneck recorded, augmented by information provided by the Mingus biographer Brian Priestley and previously unpublished photos at the time of the original recordings. MINGUS DYNASTY time!
