hi-fi news Ken Kessler, January 2016  Sound Quality 90/100

Wanna torment those who hate mono? This live recording- without question one of Ray Charle's finest - dates from 1959 but it is so room filling that you'll soon forget the single -channel status. It's all here: rousing, soul- stirring takes of `The Right Time', `What'd I Say', an utterly devastating 'Drown in My Own Tears'.   The Raylettes were on top form, with backing vocals that perfectly augment some hyper-funky playing from a line-up that includes David Newman on sax. This is a short set, but its quality-not quantity.

The audiophile canon is filled with Ray Charles releases, but this one ranks with the very best. They didn't call him a genius for nothing.   The historical value trumps the admittedly non-audiophile quality acoustics..With the welcome issue of this classic album on 180 gram vinyl, Pure Pleasure provides just that. We get as close to the genius as possible from 100 feet away. Rarely has a single microphone provided music so memorable… Audiophile Audition

Ray Charles In Person (1960), recorded at a concert in Atlanta in 1959—with one microphone, but of remarkably high audio quality—is the most cathartic of all Charles' discs

At a concert held at Herndon Stadium in Atlanta on May 28, 1959, Ray Charles turns in a blistering version of "What'd I Say" and takes on the big-band era with versions of Tommy Dorsey's "Yes Indeed!" and Artie Shaw's "Frenesi," not to mention performances of "The Right Time" and "Tell the Truth."

There are albums that lacking in sound quality can still be highly recommended for their historical significance in highlighting a true superstar in the prime of his or her life. It is worth a premium price to obtain such an album in the best quality sound available. Such is the case with the release of  In Person by Ray Charles, by Pure Pleasure Records out of England.

Ray Charles was recorded as part of a 12-act show at the Herndon Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia on May 28, 1959. The concert was a recognition of the fifth anniversary of WAOK, a local Atlanta radio station. It must have been a mighty fine celebration as the headliners included Ruth Brown, The Drifters, Jimmy Reed, and B.B. King. Brother Ray was the final act and the audience went absolutely berserk for Charles. Approximately four years before the Beatles stormed the US, the enthusiasm of the Atlanta crowd for Ray Charles was palpable. Even in a rainstorm, 9000 people remained for Ray’s band and the Raylettes. Recorded over a mere half hour on a single one-track tape recorder using only one mic 100 feet from the stage, the heat generated by Ray and his band could have been enough to dry any wet clothes.

Pure Pleasure’s Ray Staff has done an admirable job in presenting the just passable recording quality to its maximum benefit. The solos of Fathead Newman and Marcus Belgrave retain their bite, and the two vocal solos of the inimitable Marjorie Hendricks must be heard to be believed. Her legendary fiery voice as the leader of the original Raylettes is put to full effect on “The Right Time” and “Tell the Truth.” She has never received the attention she deserved as a rightful forgotten member of the “20 Feet From Stardom” sisterhood.

On two tracks, “The Spirit-Feel,” and “Frenesi,” we are treated to true jazz instrumentals with tenor, David Newman, baritone saxist, Bennie Crawford, and the trumpets of Marcus Belgrave and John Hunt, showing their talents, well before Charles concentrated on primarily vocal selections during his career.

With the welcome issue of this classic album on 180 gram vinyl, Pure Pleasure provides just that. We get as close to the genius as possible from 100 feet away. Rarely has a single microphone provided music so memorable…

The Restoration of the Art of Sound
180g Vinyl Mastered From The Best Available Sources

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records. During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s – or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production. To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

There really is nothing quite like it.  It’s the touch, the feel, you have to stop and stare, the cover,  the real thing, even the smell.

Its tangible, you can feel it, see it, study it,   muse/dream over it, it’s real, someone  has spent hours and hours over its construction and presentation. Pure Pleasure Records is just that, Pure Pleasure and that is what it has set out to be.

The music and the physical record.  Something to keep, treasure, admire and above all enjoy.Of course with vinyl it’s not just a record, it’s the cover,  the sleeve notes, you are  holding a unique package, produced by craftsmen.
