The repertoire presented here allows the listener a rare insight into the more personal side of Kogan’s performance and interpretation. It provides an intimate portrait together with his wife, Elisabeth Gilels in works of equal stature by Leclair, Telemann and Ysaÿe (known as ‘The King of the Violin’).

A collection of rare and hidden gems, often overlooked for Kogan’s grander concerto performances in Tchaikovsky, Beethoven & Brahms. Kogan displays a brilliant and finely honed technique in these superb recordings.

This record, first published in 1964, enjoys cult status among audiophile chamber music fans. And they are indeed legendary recordings that the Russian violin virtuoso Leonid Kogan made with his wife Elisabeth Gilels one day. The program consists of rarely heard pieces for two violins. Page 1 contains three baroque sonatas by the composers Jean-Marie Leclair and Georg Philipp Telemann.

Thanks to the excellent interpretation of the duo partners, the pleasantly light-footed pieces become a real listening experience. This also applies to “Sonata No. 1” by the Belgian composer Eugne Ysae. Kogan and Gilels master this demanding music from the beginning of the 20th century just as well. In general it is noticeable in all performances how perfectly the two harmonize and develop a homogeneous overall sound. The superb recording captures all the details of the complaint and does justice to the dynamic range of the players. Lovers of high-quality recordings of violin repertoire should not hesitate long with this rarity
