Sergiu Celibidache conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Brahms Violin Concerto in D, Op.77, featuring violinist Ida Haendel, the "Grande Dame of the Violin." In a life that has spanned the greater part of the twentieth century Ida Haendel remains one of the most enduring idols of the concert platform, an inspiration to both performers and music-lovers through her many recordings as well as her live performances and broadcasts.

It was soon after this recording from 3.6.1953 that the great Romanian definitively turned away from the record industry - to never again be able to enter a studio. Listening to a record is like having a picture of Brigitte Bardot going to bed. This can be quite divided opinion; But regular concertgoers will hardly be able to contradict them. Nevertheless, one would wish that Celibidache had left more official testimonies - for those who could not afford a long journey to one of his concerts, as well as for the followers. After his death in 1996 several of his radio recordings (for live transmissions, he was still ready) have appeared - each one of them an experience, especially the documents from the late Munich years.

On the LP (the original appeared on His Master's Voice under the number CLP 1032 and can not be paid in good condition), the conductor was considerably younger (40) and his choice of tempos was not as extreme as later, but the incredible intensity , With which this extreme, multi-talented human music performed, is also unmistakable here. He found a perfect partner in the still young (25) Ida Haendel, there seems to be perfect agreement on the design of the work. Although this is already fundamentally wrong, because the music is not "designed", not interpreted - but as if it would arise out of nothing. Probably, of course, this is only an imitation of what one could have experienced in a live performance in the same line. But we will not be able to enjoy all this in this life, and what can be experienced here from Celibidache's so-deserved preserve - it is already a whole lot, picture, Bardot .
