Nathan Milstein, violin
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
Nathan Milstein performed Glazounov's concerto for both his public debut (under the direction of the composer) and his American debut (under the direction of Stokowski). It is only fitting that the same work was chosen for his 1957 debut in stereophonic sound. Glazounov's towering opus was coupled with another work close to his heart; Dvorak's Violin Concerto. This is the second of his three recordings of the Dvorak concerto -- and it is arguably the best! Milstein collaborated with his long-time associates,
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and conductor William Steinberg. This dynamic team had already recorded the seminal Brahms and Beethoven concertos, in performances of unsurpassed vigor and joy. Their work together is perhaps the finest example of the chemistry between soloist and conductor.
