Pro-Ject - Phono Box RS Phono Stage
+ Power Box RS Phono - Linear / Battery power supply PSU
I can’t think of anything that beats or approaches the Pro-Ject Phono Box RS in terms of features and build quality and it competes sonically with everything I’ve heard at or near its price point. The Pro-Ject Phono Box RS is a remarkably well-constructed, uniquely featured MM/MC phono preamplifier that offers for $999 fully balanced, dual-differential performance, low subjective noise and rich, fully bodied sonics Pro-Ject’s MM/MC Phono Box RS Is A Chronic Overachiever I drove the Phono Box RS with a variety of cartridges more expensive than are likely to be used with it, including the Lyra Etna, Atlas, Atlas SL and Titan i MC cartridges as well as with the Ortofon A-95, and Miyajima Labs Zero and Premium BE mono cartridges The violin’s presence between the speakers was three-dimensional, with a pleasing and honest sheen, though not as airy and light as I later heard it through the fifty times more expensive Ypsilon VPS-100 silver edition phono preamp that I’m still paying off. Not surprising, but the Phono Box RS’s rendering of the violin and the orchestra was plenty involving tonally, spatially and dynamically.- Michael Fremer Analogue Planet
This is the best specified phono stage I have ever seen for under £1,000 and not for the first time on encountering a Pro-Ject product, I'm left wondering how they have done it for the price." - HIFI Choice
The Phono Box RS represents Pro-Ject Audio's first foray into the world of high-end electronics. As masters of the analogue domain, it seems only fitting that their first model in this new Reference Series range is a phono stage of true distinction.
The Phono Box RS is an ultra-low noise and distortion preamplifier made with the audio connoisseur in mind. With this in mind, it offers not only a breathtaking performance, but is also capable of being fine-tweaked to suit a wide variety of premium pick-up cartridges. In fact, the Phono Box RS has a unique variable impedance control on the front panel which means impedance adjustments can now be done during music playback!
Due to the use of some of the finest quality components available, like the SSM2019 pre-amplifier from Analog Devices on the input stages and Linear Technology's LT1010 as a high current buffer stage, the Phono Box RS delivers ultra-low levels of distortion and noise. Its very low output impedance makes it insensitive to the selection of interconnect cable types and lengths.
Fully-passive RIAA and DECCA equalisation is selectable via the stylish switches on the front panel, as is the output Gain (on XLR and RCA) and a handy Mute function (the F/V switch relates to switching on and off the variable impedance control). Further cartridge adjustment is done via the familiar dip-switch layout on the back panel.
The Phono Box RS offers fully balanced, dual-mono circuitry and both XLR and RCA inputs and outputs, earning it recognition in a wide variety of high-end systems.
All in all, vinyl playback will never have sounded as clear, detailed and smooth, than with this superlative phono stage!
It’s a lovely package if you’re a tweaky turntable user, and even if you’re not then it will impress with its superlative finish.” HIFI News
“the Phono Box ranks as one of the most flexible phono stages we've seen for under £1000." HIFI Choice
"Highly Commended" HIFI News
The sound of the Pro-ject Phono Box RS can be described as detailed, refined and classy according to Hi-Fi News, who mentioned that it has the widest soundstage of all contenders on test. Overall, it aims to please everybody and it largely succeeds, but at the cost of not excelling in any particular area. still, it makes for an engaging, if somewhat analytic, listen.
The Phono Box RS is a high-performance value ‐ rarely is there a product that delivers such clear, detailed and smooth sound from vinyl records at such a modest price.
The many configuration options of Phono Box RS invite vinyl collectorsand cartridge explorers toplay with. The lively, intense sound is controlled and subtle - Stereoplay Verdict Price/Performance Outstanding

The Power Box RS Phono
This box, sized and built to the same high standard as the Phono Box RS itself, fully isolates the Phono Box from the A.C. line using Lithium Polymer batteries, one for each channel, to provide about four hours of use. Once the battery drains to certain level the Power Box automatically connects to the A.C. to charge the battery. While the benefit of being off the grid is temporarily lost, the preamp still runs off of the battery, which acts like a filter bank to produce better sound than were the unit running off of the standard “Wal Wart”—or at least that’s the claim. It didn’t take long to hear the benefits of the Power Box RS Phono. It produced greater transparency, blacker backgrounds that greatly improved low level detail resolution, deeper bass and even more sense of the hall on that MJQ record. The improvement was across the board and not at all subtle. If you buy the Phono Box RS and later add the battery supply, make sure it’s returnable if you don’t hear the improvement. I doubt you’ll be returning it - Micheal Fremer www.analogplanet.com
