"...Sonically, one is hard pressed to find a better sound, studio jazz recording than Out of the Afternoon...Place Out of the Afternoon atop your must-have LP order list. No, upon further reflection, just order it!" - Myles B. Astor, Positive Feedback Online,

Haynes' drums crackle throughout - his nickname was Snap Crackle - and Van Gelder (who engineered each of these sessions) captured every nuance of tone, texture, color, air, dynamics, and presence in the room. Flanagan's piano and Grimes' bass are subtly woven into the overall flow of each tune, as opposed to standing out in any way, and Kirk's extraordinary array of kaleidoscopically colored instruments is beautifully captured. - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound magazine,

"...this is first rate - being a special mastering  The players are solidly placed on the stereo soundstage and with great depth and air around them. And the music is creative without becoming the least bit inaccessible - a terrific album right up there with the best of them." - John Henry, Audiophile Audition,

A 1962 set from the Roy Haynes Quartet which, at the time, consisted of Haynes, Henry Grimes on bass, Tommy Flanagan on piano and Roland Kirk on saxes, manzello, stritch and flutes. The album is a delightful mix of technique in arrangement and performance, with all of the musicians delivering terrific work. Haynes' drumming is absolutely wonderful here, lightly dancing around the other instruments, Flanagan's piano playing is equally light and delicate, Grimes' bass work is outstanding and Kirk's sax and flute work is as excellent as ever.
